Hi! βHey! Welcome!
Well, it's a new year. This edition will feel a little 'unfresh' for some, as it's a catchup of the past week-or-two, but there's some new stuff too!
So we've got the end of MTV's music channels, the new 'Wonder Man' trailer, and a hacker dressed as the Pink Ranger tearing down white nationalism. Plus: The 'Clicks Communicator' keyboard phone, Lego's new Smart Play bricks, and why Meta thinks we should watermark human content instead of AI.
ββ
π» I've understood for a while how insanely tiny today's chips are, but it was entirely academic. I've never bothered to stop and think about all these nanometre architectures exclusively from the perspective of scale β but this 12-minute video collab between MKBHD and Epic Spaceman is an astonishing visual journey that I really wish was a full documentary. Incredible stuff!
π΅ MTV is shutting down its 24-hour music channels. Honestly I didn't realise it hadn't already done that a long time ago, but I guess my complete lack of interest in MTV in this modern era is part of why it's closing 'em down!
π± Intrigued by this upcoming Meadow phone, designed as a compact phone that runs all the usual apps, but in a size that should inspire less use. There are no reviews of it yet, but this Ikko Mind One (youtube) phone is a similar concept.
I think I want it?
Actually, forget that. I want the Clicks Communicator. π
This Blackberried bad boy was revealed in the hours after I wrote the above, and it's definitely on my list for 2026. Super cool.
I never got to own an actual Blackberry, but I miss the physical keyboard of my old HTC Windows phone. Very keen to try this one!
βπΏ I don't look forward to much in the MCU anymore, but this trailer for the Wonder Man miniseries looks fun as hell. It's pretty cleverly tapping into that superhero fatigue we've all got, and it'll be interesting to see how successful that idea will be! Hits Disney+ on Jan 26!
π€ AI content is now so ubiquitous, according to Meta's boss of Instagram and Threads, that it would be simpler to watermark all genuine human-made content than to try to identify and mark all AI content. Greeeeat.
𧱠Smart Play feels like a pretty big launch for Lego: A 2x4 brick with an accelerometer, NFC, Bluetooth, onboard sound... it'll be very interesting to see how the creative tech folk out there will use these in other applications! Smart home stuff, intelligent EDC stuff, etc.
π©· A hacker dressed as the Pink Ranger (Power Rangers) took down three white nationalist sites, live on stage. Love to see it.
π―οΈ It's way too expensive for the likes of I, but I absolutely love this desktop lamp that perfectly mimics the mechanics of early lighthouses, with a simple candle set behind a lens that amplifies and casts its light into a beautiful shape. Much want!
π§βπ¨ A sad day for the web: the lady who brutalised that painting of Jesus in an attempt to restore it β instead leading to a decade of chuckles β has died at 94.
𧱠Lego has done a few Back to the Future kits now, but this A$40 Delorean with Doc and Marty feels like crazy good value. I may have to scoop this up!
π Maclock is a desktop alarm clock styled like a classic Apple Macintosh that even comes with a little floppy disk to boot it up. Fun idea!
Okay, we're done for today. How was it?
