Japan opens up iOS & Nirvanna The Band 🎸

Hi! Hey! Welcome!

Apologies, friends, this one is a bit late! Our things arrived back from Germany this week, so it's been a busy few days of unpacking and finding space for it all. Exhausted!

Today: Guy Ritchie's got a Young Sherlock series, and Sony's buying the Peanuts gang. Plus: A review of the A$3600 Galaxy Z Trifold, Warner Bros has rejected Paramount's higher bid, and Japan is forcing Apple to open up iOS. Oh there's also a Muppetised Daniel Craig on Sesame Street, and a stack of last-minute gadget gift ideas.

🍿 Guy Ritchie's got a Young Sherlock series coming on Prime Video and it looks pretty good. I'm already a subscriber, so I'll be checking this one out for sure.

"Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty. Unfolding in 1870s Oxford and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident."

πŸ₯œ Good grief, Charlie Brown and Snoopy are now Sony guys!

The Japanese tech and entertainment giant has bought Charles M Schulz' lovable Peanuts gang for A$690m (US$457m) from the legend's surviving family. Well, it already owned 39%, and this deal grows that share to 80%, so it now effectively owns the 75-year-old IP.

(Interestingly, current copyright law means early versions of the Peanuts gang will enter the public domain in 2045.)

πŸ“± Excellent review here of the new Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold by Michael Fisher. It's an impressive but pricey A$3600 ($2400 USD) phone that folds out twice to become a 10" tablet – but it doesn't have stylus support, and it won't be coming to Australia.

πŸ“± Japan has joined Europe on the list of markets that have successfully forced Apple to open iOS up to third-party app stores and payment methods. Come on Australia, you can do it!

🍿 Warner Bros has rejected Paramount's $108b USD bid, declaring its existing agreement to be bought by Netflix for $87b USD is in the best interests of the brand and its shareholders.

🍿 Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie – I have no idea what is happening in this trailer but I'm pumped for it πŸ˜†

"When their plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008."

πŸ‘‹ Remember the Meetup app? Maybe you used it once, maybe never – but it never went away, and apparently it's now doing quite well. Probably something to do with millennials and gen Z trying to spend less time on social media and reconnect with real life?

Anyway, the app has just had a big update. Might be worth checking out!

🍿 Knives Out on Sesame Street? Eh, why not. Daniel Craig in Muppet form is a sight to behold! (Also, this totally unrelated 14-year-old Sesame Street video between Bert and Andy Samberg is great.) (Incidentally, The Muppet Show is returning in February!)

πŸ¦… Thinking about visiting the US? Don't, says this American who lives in Australia. (According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the US was predicted to lose A$18b in international visitor spending in 2025.)

GIFTMAS! Last chance? 😬

Here's a few gadgets you might get before Christmas, if you act fast!

One more, post-Christmas delivery... This one won't arrive in time, but I couldn't resist including it.

🧰 Personal recommendation: HOTO 3.6V Electric Screwdriver Kit!

My friend Josh mentioned he'd been thinking about getting this but wasn't sure if it would live up to the hype. Luckily for him, I've had one for just over a year and it's been brilliant. I've just reassembled all of our furniture with it after moving house, and that's only the latest use. It's torquey, lightweight, well built, and with really good quality bits in the case. Easy thumbs-up from me!

Need it before Christmas? This link is the same unit, but with fewer bits.

Okay, we're done for today. How was it?

Hi! Hey! Welcome! Well, it's a new year. This edition will feel a little 'unfresh' for some, as it's a catchup of the past week-or-two, but there's some new stuff too! So we've got the end of MTV's music channels, the new 'Wonder Man' trailer, and a hacker dressed as the Pink Ranger tearing down white nationalism. Plus: The 'Clicks Communicator' keyboard phone, Lego's new Smart Play bricks, and why Meta thinks we should watermark human content instead of AI. πŸ’» I've understood for a while how...

Hi! Hey! Welcome! I hope you all had a great Christmas (for those who celebrate), and that you manage to get some well-earned rest in this 'in between' time before 2026! TODAY: Salesforce's AI automation backfire and the star-studded 'Madden' movie teaser. Plus: The new Retroid Pocket 6 handheld, Chris Evans returning in Avengers Doomsday, and the fascinating condition of Aphantasia. There's also the very whacky 'Action Gourmet' anime genre and a retro-style Mac Mini stand. 🀣 After laying off...

Hi! Hey! Welcome! TODAY! I had a nap on the couch. Also, the first trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' is here, and I'm lolling at some piracy group having backed up 99% of Spotify. Plus: Rumours of a Switch-like PlayStation 6, a massive list of albums turning old in 2026 (Tool, Daft Punk, Weezer!), and man I want the Creator Micro 2 macropad. 🍿 The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is upon us. No idea why this official video is only 1080p, but still, it looks...
