Spielberg's new sci-fi, iRobot is dead, & 'Slop' 🤖

Hi! Hey! Welcome!

The teaser for Spielberg’s 'Disclosure Day' is out, and Merriam-Webster has declared 'Slop' the word of the year. Also: incredible X-ray photography by Nick Veasey, Seth Rogen’s pottery (?!), Takuya Fukugawa’s Lego art, and the comic return of Lobo!

🍿 Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi thriller, Disclosure Day, dropped its first teaser clip today. It didn't really grab me, but I hope it's good.

As much as Spielberg truly is is the goat, and I loved The Fabelmans, I'm not certain he's still got the juice for this type of story. I dunno, we'll see. Perhaps I've become too much of a cynic!

📖 America's Merriam-Webster Dictionary has declared 'Slop' its word of the year, in reference to the crap content produced with AI. It follows Australia's Macquarie Dictionary making a similar announcement in November, with the full term 'AI Slop' as its word of the year.

🧱 These games- and anime-inspired Lego characters by Takuya Fukugawa are incredible! They're only computer-modelled 3D renders, but they sure look doable. I wonder if Lego has his résumé yet...

💀 Nick Veasey is a photographer with an incredible speciality: X-ray imaging of everyday objects, large and small. I don't fully understand how he does it, except that it's real and it's incredible.

He does however have an explainer page here, with videos, so I'm going to plow through them tonight!

🍿 I'm not the horror movie sort really, but this new film Hokum starring Adam Scott (Severance, Parks & Recreation) looks like it could win some fans!

"When reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman (Scott) retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Soon, disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw him into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past."

🔗 Teaser trailer – watch for the early jump scare!

☕ Absolutely love these Japanese cups. Pricey, but beautiful!

📷 I quite like Seth Rogen, for all that he's accomplished while being a total clown. This GQ video, '10 things Seth Rogen can't live without' is good fun! Get ready to learn more than you could've expected to ever learn about... pottery 😆

🤖 Autonomous vaccuum maker iRobot is dead, thanks in part to Chinese rivals and a series of bad decisions. Who's next, GoPro? DJI and Insta360 have been running rings around the American action-cam maker for a while now!

📱 I can't say enough good things about this folding Kenu Stance+ magsafe phone stand. It ain't cheap at A$120, but it's insanely versatile. I've used it not just on tables but on planes and in cars, I've wrapped it around poles for a quick selfie, etc. Get it!

🗯️ Lobo's back in March 2026! This guy, the main man, was my fave comic book character in the '90s. For a metalhead illustrator in his teens and early 20s, this guy's hilariously over-the-top look and satirically macho attitude was exactly my speed. All cleverly crafted to work against him as often as in his favour, of course.

I have, of course, evolved in my later years – as has most of the world when it comes to those topics – so it'll be very interesting to see how his return is crafted! Cheers to MCE for the link.

Hi! Hey! Welcome! Well, it's a new year. This edition will feel a little 'unfresh' for some, as it's a catchup of the past week-or-two, but there's some new stuff too! So we've got the end of MTV's music channels, the new 'Wonder Man' trailer, and a hacker dressed as the Pink Ranger tearing down white nationalism. Plus: The 'Clicks Communicator' keyboard phone, Lego's new Smart Play bricks, and why Meta thinks we should watermark human content instead of AI. 💻 I've understood for a while how...

Hi! Hey! Welcome! I hope you all had a great Christmas (for those who celebrate), and that you manage to get some well-earned rest in this 'in between' time before 2026! TODAY: Salesforce's AI automation backfire and the star-studded 'Madden' movie teaser. Plus: The new Retroid Pocket 6 handheld, Chris Evans returning in Avengers Doomsday, and the fascinating condition of Aphantasia. There's also the very whacky 'Action Gourmet' anime genre and a retro-style Mac Mini stand. 🤣 After laying off...

Hi! Hey! Welcome! TODAY! I had a nap on the couch. Also, the first trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' is here, and I'm lolling at some piracy group having backed up 99% of Spotify. Plus: Rumours of a Switch-like PlayStation 6, a massive list of albums turning old in 2026 (Tool, Daft Punk, Weezer!), and man I want the Creator Micro 2 macropad. 🍿 The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is upon us. No idea why this official video is only 1080p, but still, it looks...
